    Clove Hitch

    One of the most simple hitches, quick to tie but can be jerked loose and can jam, so should only be used as a temporary knot.

    1. Take the working end round the rail or post.

    2. complete a full turn round with the working end crossing the standing part.

    3. Continue around the rail or post one half turn. Thread the working end under the loop made by the crossover as marked by the arrow.

    4. Work the hitch tight, with the standing and working parts snug against each other.
