FOST (Flag Officer Sea Training)
Operational Sea Training (OST) - where the RFA ships have a tailored programme to suit their individual operational requirements. Training is conducted at Devonport, and around the South West Approaches, which consists of warfare, weapon engineering, marine engineering, logistics, damage control and fire fighting.
...a day without guns is a day wasted.
Joint Maritime Courses (JMC) - These are conducted off the North West of Scotland. This area provides an ideal environment for training, with the weather often adding another dimension to the training.
Early in 2005, while the rest of the country was basking in sunshine, the weather off the North West of Scotland was particularly bad, with gales, fog, and lots of rain.
The first week of the JMC the ships work to a scenario featuring increasing tension, operational preparations and Rules of Engagement.
In the second week of the JMC the scenario develops and has extensive free play, multi-threat exercises and a greater requirement for planning and decision making by the commanders at sea. The JMC can include up to 50 ships, 5 submarines from different countries and well over 100 aircraft
In the RFA, FOST is one of the things we have to put up with!
One of the main things to remember when at FOST is keep smiling!
FOST “We are here to train you, not test you!”
SHIP “How do you do that?”
FOST “Well, we give you tests while training you to see how well we have trained you.”
SHIP “But you said that you didn’t test us!”
FOST “That’s correct we are here to train you.”
SHIP “but you said “ Well we give you tests while training you to see how well we have trained you.” didn’t you!”
